5 Places to Eat in Santiago, Chile

I recently spent a few days in Santiago, Chile and as usual, spent a lot of time hunting down some great places to eat. I like to pick a good range of places from high end restaurants to cafes to food stalls. Just a note that we were staying in Providencia, so many of these are walkable to that area. Here are 5 places to eat in Santiago, Chile:

Krossbar Orrego Luco Sopapillas - 5 Places to Eat in Santiago Chile, StefanieGrace.com

5 Places to Eat in Santiago Chile

Krossbar (Orrego Luco)

This was the first place we visited on our first day in Santiago. We hit up TripAdvisor for a good local lunch spot and found Krossbar, from Cerveceria Kross, listed as no2 in Santiago. The place was buzzing. They serve up beer, burgers & pizza. I enjoyed some good wine too. They actually brew their own beer at Kross, so Rob tried that and enjoyed it. We sat out in the beer garden, but they also had a lot of inside seating and a front terrace on the street.

We had sopapillas (above) and a chicken salad and a burger. All were good. The salad was bit boring, but that was definitely my fault as it was what I chose over something more deep-fried. It definitely seemed like a good place for a working lunch as a few young groups popped in for a quick bite when we were there. I imagine it’s quite a vibe in the evening. There are actually more than one of these places across the city but this one was the highest rated by far.

Baco Crudo - 5 Places to Eat in Santiago Chile, StefanieGrace.com

Baco

No joke, this may be one of the best restaurants that we have ever been to. We were so enamoured by Baco in Providencia that we went 3 times in less than a week. Ordinarily I would put my foot down in that circumstance, (in fact we both would) but we just both love the ambience and fresh menu in this place. The service is excellent. There was a terrific wine list (they also have a wine shop in the city). Our favourite dishes were the salmon tartare and the pulpo a la plancha (grilled octopus) to start. It was covered in olive oil & salt which we delighted in dipping warm, fresh bread into.

We noticed a lot of people were sharing various dishes. We loved how they were very open to you sharing dishes, ordering as you go and mixing up the order of what they wanted to eat. Also, we loved the fillet steak with pont neuf chips and béarnaise sauce & the crudo (steak tartare). Everything was huge portions – very easy to share. Saving room for dessert is a good idea too – but share them!

Bocanariz Wine Bar - 5 Places to Eat in Santiago Chile, StefanieGrace.com

Bocanáriz Restaurant Y Wine Bar

Just a few stops from our Providencia hotel on the metro, Bocanariz is in the pretty Lastarria area of Santiago, Chile. Often voted one of the best restaurants in the city, its menu is based around its wine list – not the other way around as you would find in most restaurants. We opted for the tasting menu. We started with a flight of wine with set dishes – scallops, gyoza and other bites followed by a marvellous flank steak main course with a local red wine and then a ridiculously delicious white chocolate passionfruit cheesecake. The dessert was accompanied by an award winning Pisco and a coffee. We really enjoyed it and then walked up the street to have cocktails on the rooftop of The Singular Hotel – an institution in the city.

Uncle Fletch Burger

Uncle Fletch, Bellavista

We popped in here for a late lunch on the way to visit Pablo Neruda’s Santiago home, La Chascona. It is a burger place named after Fletcher Davis who is claimed to have invented the burger in 1880 in Texas. That afternoon, the service was a bit slow but it was 3pm on a Thursday so we let it slide. Once we had finally ordered, the food came out pretty quickly. We had an Aperol Spritz & a lager. We shared the Mustache chicken nuggets to start. Rob had the Big Texas Burger and I had a Bacon Old Cheese & added gherkins.

We both chose the rustic fries – I feel like we should have had different things but everything was quite ‘unhealthy’ and we didn’t want poutine or mac & cheese etc. Uncle Fletch is a good place for a burger with great quality meat and homemade sauces. We sadly couldn’t manage dessert even though we’d read on TripAdvisor about their famous churros!

Empanadas Tinita

Empanadas Tinita

I did a lot of research trying to find good empanadas in Santiago. And after a lot of reading, I found that some of the best ones were actually right behind our hotel. We ended up going just after checking out on our last day in the city. Empanadas Tinita is a small shop in the Providencia Market. They have been in business since 1947. They serve up traditional empanadas and had a line out of the door for the majority of the time that we were there. To try as many as possible, we opted for the ham and cheese, pino (ground beef mix) and the chicken & shared them for lunch. We actually tried a few empanada places on our travels that warrants an entire blog post in itself. So look out for that in the weeks to come!
