When I first went to South Africa, one of my favourite brunch places was Olympia Cafe and Deli, Kalk Bay. Don’t be deterred by the simple appearance outside. Greeted by a busy cafe and a jolly woman who when asked for the menu, points to the wall where various boards are placed. “There you are”, she said. I liked it instantly.
There was a mixed clientele, all at different parts of their morning. Some elderly people on a mid morning coffee and pastry stop after a little antique shopping, some younger women clearly on a business brunch with some of the best looking baked croissants I have seen. I spotted a group of young guys lapping up the salmon and avo on rye with fresh juices and coffees. That was how I was planning on my spending my Tuesday morning too.
With the sea breeze coming in through all of the open doors and a chatty atmosphere in the cafe, I had that feeling of instantly wanting to move in. Sometimes you just feel immediately at home in a place. We spent a blissful morning chatting about where we could go that afternoon, browsing the local paper, sipping coffee and people watching. if you go, you should definitely order the salmon. And the coffee. And stay a while.
