La Taqueria Barcelona Mexican restauarant

Don’t you just love it when you walk into a place when on holiday and you realise you’ve hit upon a local treasure?

Last week, we were looking for something a bit different one night in Barcelona, away from the Gothic Quarter and without the usual inflated tourist prices. We googled ‘cheap eats in Barcelona‘ and found La Taqueria listed as the first option on ‘Time Out’. Given that we had spent a long time looking for good restaurants, we wasted no more time, hopped in the shower and scooted over to the Sagrada Familia (stunning at night) and down a little side street where the lightbulb sign of La Taqueria glows in all of its glory.

The place was packed when we walked in with a fabulous mix of locals, Mexicans and a couple of lucky tourists like ourselves. We were greeted by a friendly guy who moved around a couple of bookings and managed to squeeze us in the corner if we ordered quickly and ate within 45 minutes. However, having spotted the culinary delights on the plates around us, we were pretty thrilled by this option! During the time that we sat there, two more couples came in and reserved for the next day, so I’d really recommend reserving in advance as you might not be as lucky as we were!

We opted for homemade guacamole with tortilla chips, Tacos al Pastor and upon the recommendation of our friendly waiter, the delicious Alambres de Arrachera, a delicious dish of build your own tacos with soft corn tortillas. I love food that you can get you hands involved with. Washed down with a scrumptious mango margarita, it was all so tantalising for the tastebuds. And we weren’t rushed in the slightest. Our food came, we enjoyed it with the drinks, we paid our bill and we left, grateful to have discovered this place and to have been lucky enough to get a table with no reservation. I loved the kitsch, colourful plastic plates too; it just all added to the happy, relaxed atmosphere of the restaurant. The place is truly authentic. From the simple stools and colourful decor to the tasty food and great staff. Best of all, the prices were brilliant, proving there is no need to call this kind of authentic cuisine a ‘niche’ and hike up the prices. I really enjoyed the experience. I wish we had something similar in London, because I’d go all the time!
