SS10: Greige nails!

So, have you heard that GREIGE is the new red? I’m a big fan of red nails, but it seems that they are so. last. year. (or try “decade”, but then I’m a classic girl at heart!). Hot this season is the coveted blend of grey and beige, as seen on various celebrities including Lauren Conrad, Sandra Bullock and Eva Mendes. Gwyneth was front row at Madrid fashion week sporting greige nails and the whole SS10 Chanel show, including Lily Allen wore the Particuliere shade last September. It’s official – forget Jade Green, Chanel is once again leading the nail trends this season with GREIGE.

Elle recommends that if you can’t get your hands on Chanel’s Particuliere, £16 in store now, then you should check out Nails Inc’s Jermyn Street, £10.50 or OPI’s Tickle My France-y, £9.95 (SS10 Louise Goldin show at LFW)

Frills and Fantasy!

Couture Week. Paris, January 2010.

Couture week is all about indulgence. It is fantastical one-of-a-kind joy before the seriousness of Fashion Week really starts. Not that it is something to be taken lightly. The skill involved is so intense that even the simplest of couture dresses can cost thousands of pounds. But that is the beauty of couture. Escapism, fantasy and splendor all rolled into one fabulously fun-filled week in the home of le mode, Paris.

Dior started the proceedings with a hoard of rose-covered romantic Victorian heroines in light and frilly gowns. Riccardo Tisci didn’t completely abandon black at Givenchy, but really embraced the softness of spring with satin and feathers. Armani’s offerings made the current red carpet season shrink into background with impossibly beautiful, yet strong and modern-looking gowns. Chanel continued the modern, silver galactic look with a hint of soft elegance, whilst Jean Paul Gaultier and Valentino brought a little more colour to the fore with inspiration from Mexico and the seasons respectively.

Shades of SS10 were evident throughout every show with nudes and pastels taking centre stage in beautifully soft silks, satins and chiffons. There is also a tendency with couture to be very traditional and often difficult to wear, yet many of the dresses were knee-length and simple with detailed accessories. And with the modern, galactic influence with the silver, which lifted the soft palette, the looks are actually entirely wearable! All in all, it was a fantastic tribute to spring and to the new decade as well as a brilliant indication of just how exciting AW10 Fashion Weeks just may be!

AW09 Nails

As the winter months begin to set in follow the catwalks lead with these gorgeous new nail colours. Catwalk inspired, nails inc’s new autumn/winter collection is full of rich, berry shades for the darker months and although still a little glossy, will still look fabulous with any ensemble you put together this season.

Chanel has also been channeling warm autumnal shades with their Venice collection. Inspired by one of Coco’s favourite cities, colours include Gondola and Intermezzo and are perfect for dreaming of Italian cafés whilst sitting at your computer. The quality behind Chanel never falters, so don’t expect to have to keep topping up your colours here! The varnish should last at least a week before you need to think about reapplying.

Chanel have also led the way this season with a lot of jade on the runways. Skirt suits had a fresh, minty appeal and matching nails completed the La Parisienne look. After much demand and hype after the March AW09 show, the brand decided to release Peter Philips’ Jade lacquer to the market. The colour will be available from October in limited quantities so get queuing now to avoid disappointment! However, a softer Jade Rose varnish will also be available for those who don’t manage to snag the real thing.

Another big colour for AW09 is purple and MAC have produced two beautiful colours worthy of office admiration, Cool Reserve and For Fun. The products are in high demand, so if you want them, you’re going to have to act very quickly.

Metallics are also a big trend this season, with gold and silver reigning supreme. A look that should probably be reserved for the weekend, team with lots of bling and attitude.

On a more general note, matte is back. Forget high-shine nail colours, if you’re looking to be on-trend this season in terms of your cuticles, then make sure that you purchase all of your favourite colours in a matte finish. Or, if the thought of that strikes horror into your bank balance, then try OPI Nail Envy Matte, available from HQ Hair. The clear formulation will leave your nails shine-free and oh-so-this-season.

AW09: La Parisienne

Chanel AW09

With the release of Coco avant Chanel and reignited interest in the life of Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel in the film world, fashion has followed this lead with a huge upsurge of ladylike trends on the runways and on the high street. Finally, women can embrace their sexuality by using it to take control. If you dream of strutting down a Parisian boulevard with a killer pair of heels on and a twinkle in your eye, then this may be the look for you this season.

There are two ways of wearing this look: Sexy Glamour Puss and Tailored Lady. Sexy Glamour Puss just stays on the right side of sophisticated sexy. For a bit of Paris ooh la la, go for girly lace and jewels with peekaboo designs and flashes of silk lingerie. Team sheer black stockings with ruffles, lace, bows and frills and just a slick of red lipstick. Hair is a sizzling Bardot beehive up-do. Think more woman-in-charge and less woman-who-charges! This is about being ladylike, fun and flirty with a hint of sexiness. Louis Vuitton really showed how sexy can still be sophisticated for AW09.

The Tailored lady is less Bardot and more Coco Chanel with matching skirt suits and pretty separates. This season, sensual textures are all the rage with velvet and silky satins making a big comeback. It’s powerdressing with a difference. Women can use their feminine wiles to get what they want and not overt sexuality. Embrace your femininity, whilst still remaining smart and in control. Look to the catwalks of Christian Lacroix and, of course, Chanel for inspiration.

Iconic Brand: Chanel

Born Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel in 1883 in Saumur, France, despite claiming a birthdate of 1893 in Auvergne, Coco Chanel got her nickname during a brief career as a café and concert singer. Her mother died when Gabrielle was just six years old, leaving her and her four siblings in her father’s care for a short time until her left them in order to work. Chanel learned her seamstress skills from the nuns in a monastery orphanage and opened her first millinery shop in 1909 and promptly rose to the top of the French fashion world. She often tried to hide her poor upbringing, changing the details of her life story wherever possible.

Fiercely independent, Coco never married, although she did have various relationships with very rich men in Europe that enabled her to start up her business. Her first love Arthur ‘Boy’ Capel lent her the money to buy her legendary Rue Cambon property, the home of Chanel today. She later bought shops in both Deauville and Biarritz. Whilst working as a nurse during World War II, Coco fled to Switzerland to escape the controversy surrounding her affair with a Nazi officer. Her popularity diminished a little after this, but she went back to France and her label in 1954, where she began to work with Christian Dior’s New Look and gained more fans in icons such as Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn. Chanel died in 1971, aged 88, in her penthouse apartment (now named after her) in the Hotel Ritz Paris, where she had lived for thirty years.

cchanel_cbeatonBBrand History

“The most courageous act is still to think for yourself. Aloud.”

Coco Chanel revolutionized women’s fashion. In the 1920s, at a time when the look was stiff and corseted, she working with looser fabrics such as jersey to create more liberal and practical clothing. By then Maison Chanel had been established in Paris at 31, rue Cambon and had become a serious player in the fashion market. Chanel herself, with her masculine suits, black clothing and stylish bob was also at the cutting edge of contemporary style.

The brand has since gone from strength to strength, despite its intermission during WWII, and continues to be one of the most famous and desirable labels in the world. This is, in part, due to having one of the most iconic designers in the world, Karl Lagerfeld, at the helm of the company since 1982. Lagerfeld has managed to continue to bring the brand up-to-date whilst still designing with Coco as his ultimate inspiration.

Iconic Items

“Fashion fades, only style remains the same.”

There are so many pieces in fashion history that make Chanel an iconic label.

In 1922, she launched the popular fragrance Chanel No. 5. Rumour has it that it was the fifth attempt at a Chanel perfume that was presented to her on the fifth day of the fifth month and as the number five was a favourite of Coco’s, the perfume so found its name. Marilyn Monroe was quoted as saying: “What do I wear in bed? Why, Chanel No.5, of course.” The scent is the best selling in the world and has never gone out of fashion.

Three years later Chanel launched her signature cardigan jacket, and in the following year (1926) she matched its success with her little black dress. Both items continue to be a staple part of every Chanel collection.

One of the hugely iconic items from the Chanel closet is the Chanel 2.55 handbag, named for the date it was launched in February 1955. With every generation of woman still hankering after it, the bag is a classic and a staple for any fashionista’s wardrobe today.

“I was the one who changed, it wasn’t fashion. I was the one who was in fashion.”

Coco Chanel broke the mould. With her modern hairstyle, outspoken personality and daring attitude, she revolutionized fashion. Her influence and inspiration is still felt today, from her use of monochrome to her oversized ‘costume’ pearls. The anticipation and success of the film Coco avant Chanel starring Audrey Tautou illustrates the impact that she still has on a contemporary generation. The very fact that a Chanel suit in its original design of 1923 or a quilted 2.55 handbag is still seen as a landmark purchase for women of today is a testament to her skill and indeed the impact that she had on the world of couture.

Model Profile: Lara Stone

Couture Week is often the place to shock and stand out from the crowd, but one of the main reasons for model Lara Stone’s column inches earlier this year were to do with her own inches. A UK size 10, Stone is one of the bigger models working in the mainstream fashion industry. And she doesn’t care. Neither does she care about the gap in between her front teeth. In fact, she told i-D magazine in November 2008: “Every time I go to the dentist, they always say, ‘You really need to fix that gap of yours.’ I’m like, ‘My gap is paying your dentist bills.’”. So there. And when you’re booking as many jobs as Lara, why worry about your appearance? It’s obviously working for her.

Vogue Paris editor Carine Roitfield is positively OBSESSED with the Dutch model. So much so that Stone is on the cover of September issue sporting a softer brunette look in contrast to her usual blonde. Plus, in February 2009, Stone was on the cover of Vogue Paris and the sole model throughout the whole issue, showing her versatility and potential to become one of the greats.Born in Berlin in December 1983, Stone grew up in Holland and now resides in Paris, where she is based with her mother agency IMG Models Paris. – At the age of 15, she entered the 1999 Elite Model Look contest, and despite not winning the competition, Lara was offered a contract with the prestigious agency.

Her curves afford Lara the best of both worlds in modeling. She walked in the Chanel, Givenchy and Jean-Paul Gaultier Haute Couture shows this season, yet also holds a place on Victoria Secret runways. She also appeared in the 2009 Pirelli Calendar. Stone has opened shows for Giles Deacon, Isabel Marant, Christopher Kane, Fendi, and MaxMara, and closed for Diesel, Stella McCartney, and Balmain. She has also been a prestigious “semi-exclusive” for Prada, meaning that she cannot walk in shows before Prada, as she did at Milan Fashion Week.

Funnily enough, although her hips are bigger than most runway models, her feet are in fact smaller! This is how she became known for her wobbly runway walk – by wearing shoes that were too big for her! Stone told Vogue Paris that she does not actually like the runway for this purpose and spends most of her time thinking “do not fall, do not fall”! Even more recently, Stone, who even has a nipple piercing was featured on the cover of W Magazine inAugust 2009 and was declared the most-wanted face of the moment. So, take in this face, as you’ll probably be seeing it for years to come!

Lagerfeld’s Luxury Lifestyle

My French teacher will be pleased to know that I have finally found some French reading material: French Vogue online! Today I came across a very interesting quote from Karl Lagerfeld of Chanel:

“Nous n’avons pas de budget imposé et nous faisons ce que nous voulons. D’habitude, l’argent que nous jetons par les fenêtres nous revient par la grande porte. Mon luxe, c’est que dans ma vie, je n’ai pas besoin de penser à l’argent”

(My translation: “We don’t have a set budget and we do whatever we want. Usually, the money that we throw out of the windows comes straight back to us through the main door. My luxury is that in my life, I don’t need to think about money” )

It’s a nice thought isn’t it? Though I guess that it just proves that the luxury brands really are just that: a luxury.
