Style-Spotting at London Fashion Week

London Fashion Week is becoming a twice-yearly staple in my year. And just FYI, that is absolutely fine by me.
Yahoo! Lifestyle UK recently invited me to become one of their regular contributors meaning that you’ll be seeing a lot more of me there, and possibly not as much on here, but I’m working on a balance!
I went style spotting at London Fashion Weekend last week. Armed with my new camera, we went looking for the best looks (that could be actually worn in real life- no pom poms allowed) and snapped away. The best results can be found here.

PS. I wasn’t part of the style-spotting, we just took these pics on breaks!

What were your favourite looks at fashion week?

Clothes Show LIVE with Yahoo!

Back in December I mentioned that I went to the Clothes Show Live with Yahoo! Lifestyle, but I never actually showed you the results. The weekend was pretty hardcore, with events all day long and then write ups lasting until 1am. (Major effort, so please ignore any typos that you may see…)

One of the best things about the weekend was finally getting to know a fellow contributor. Sam set up The Fashion Guise and writes for Yahoo! too. We spent most of the weekend together, grabbing coffees and notepads and we also did a street style blog together, which was so much fun running around chasing fashionistas at the event. This is due to be published soon. Keep a look out!

That Friday Feeling

The last few weeks haven’t been the best for me, but I’m looking forward to a relaxing weekend filled with fun, friends and family.

Here’s some positivity for you all. I found this Facebook page that fills your news feed with positive, inspirational thoughts all day long. Right up my street.

Life is like a book

I’m getting Kardashian fever. In fact I have quite an obsession with spending my Sunday evenings watching E! Kim, Khloe and Kourtney will be at Westfield Shopping Centre tomorrow for the launch of Kardashian Kollection at Dorothy Perkins. Items went on sale on Thursday, but I managed to grab something in an online preview last Sunday. It came with a yummy new Cadbury Crispello too.

I wrote a guest blog for Great British Chefs a couple of weeks ago with ideas for using up your leftover pumpkins.

I also wrote a piece on Yahoo! about whether Lena Dunham’s Girls would work for a British audience. Find out here what I found out.

I’ve been pinning. A LOT.

I read this blog post and it really resonated with me. Thanks to Amy for letting me know about it! I like it so much that I think a whole other post will come from this.

Tonight I’m heading to the O2 with Lacoste for the ATP World Tour and I’ve got lots lined up this weekend too, as well as trying to spend a little time studying Photoshop and HTML. Fun.

What are you all doing this weekend?

Footprints in the Sand

I recently wrote this post for Yahoo! on visualising your way to the perfect workout.

Working out at home generally puts people into two camps; those that enjoy doing it and those that do not. I would put myself in the ‘like’ category, even though I do find it rather tedious at times. It’s cheap, easy and quick.

One of the biggest motivators for me when I am working out in cold, dreary England is visualisation. When I’m on an exercise bike, I picture myself cycling through the Spanish vineyards as I did most summers as a teenager. When I’m doing my Jillian Michaels DVD, I find myself imagining that I’m a contestant on The Biggest Loser and it takes just one workout at a time to get to that goal. On the treadmill, I conjure up a fresher memory.

Last November I quit my job and went on a two week long road trip around Costa Rica. It was just what I needed after a particularly stressful time: sun, sea, sand and relaxation. However, I had been so busy packing up my apartment before we left that I hadn’t had much time to hit the gym. This meant that I needed to do a little toning up whilst on the beach. So, one afternoon when the boyfriend was dozing, I just set off. I had been watching all of these super fit people jogging down the beach with a their lovely tans and I quite fancied a bit of that action. With the wind in my hair, the sand between my toes and a cool breeze easing some of the heat, I found myself feeling more free than I had in years. It took me back to those summers cycling in Spain, to the evenings when I would just go and sit on the dunes of the beach and listen to the waves. There is nothing more peaceful than that. You feel so small in this big world, yet so safe and strong at the same time. I enjoyed my run so much, that I went for again the next day too. The day after that, I tried some beach football and bodyboarding.

Visualisation is a tried and tested technique used for various activities across the world. Want to lose weight? Think thin. Want to be rich? Imagine yourself in that situation until you work out how to get there. Want to be happy and healthy? Visualise a time when you truly felt that way and channel it in every workout after that. Remembering how happy I was in those small moments on that beach in Costa Rica is what get me through even the most boring of workouts now that I’m back in England.

My friend used to make fun of me for listening to Spanish power ballads in the gym, when everyone else was listening to Black Eyed Peas or something equally upbeat. I used to cycle ten miles a day in the gym plugged into my happy music and imagining myself skinny and happily frolicking on a beach in the sun. Whatever works for you, I guess. The truth is that it worked for me. And I’d fully recommend it to you. Picture that happy moment in your head. The smile will get you through the pain.

Dinner Party Tips…

I recently wrote a post on Yahoo! on how to plan the perfect dinner party. I love hosting and cooking dinner for people, especially when there’s a theme involved.

In the same way that staycations are sometimes better than trips abroad, staying in can be better than going out. But if the thought of hosting a dinner party has you reaching for the takeaway menus, take a look at my easy tips for putting together the perfect dinner party menu.
Theme it
This may be obvious to you at the time such as Easter or Christmas, but you could also pick a country, decade or TV show as your theme. If your food is Mexican, get some sombreros. If it’s Italian, Indian or Spanish, pick relevant music for the background. Games are also a great way of getting people to interact with each other and let their hair down.
Choice of menu
The menu is the key ingredient to your night. Thinking seasonally here helps. If it’s a hot summer’s evening…

Girls’ Day Out at the Ideal Home Show!

For the perfect girls’ day out, look no further than the Ideal Home Show. From interiors and garden to food and housewares, there is something for everyone. Inspiration for home renovation, redecoration, kitchen creativity and fauna fascinations can be found in every corner. But if you aren’t looking to add to your kitchen gadgetry or redo your guest room, then don’t forget the Ideal Woman section. Teaming with the latest beauty products, testers and treatments as well as a full catwalk show schedule and a pretty Victorian Tea Room by celebrity chef Gregg Wallace of Masterchef fame, Ideal Woman could fill up your day pretty quickly without a glance at the rest of the exhibition. Stands filled with handbags, cosmetic products and beautiful jewellery are interspersed with beauty treatments such as eyebrow threading, teeth-whitening and a plethora of all-in-one bronzer stands. Watch out for those. Your eyebrows will thank you.

Food, Glorious Food at the Ideal Home Show 2012

I recently attended the Ideal Home Show for Yahoo! My review is below.
and P.S. Gregg Wallace is lovely!

The Ideal Home Show is back for another year at the Earl’s Court Exhibition Centre in London from Friday 16th March until Sunday 1st April. From gadgets and gizmos to chutneys and churros, the Ideal Food and Ideal Homewares sections of the exhibition are arguably the most stimulating. With tantalizing aromas to tempt your tastebuds and machines that even the most technologically advanced of chefs would be proud to own, it’s an exciting place to be. We sent Stefanie Haigh along on the opening day to get the lowdown on what you should be seeing, supping and snapping up at this year’s show.
Food, Glorious Food
The food section is an absolute dream for foodies. Once in the heart of it, you feel like you are in a market place with everything the local area has to offer but with one small exception: all of the local areas have come to you. Feast your eyes on Yorkshire steak suet puddings, New Zealand pies, Cornish clotted cream ice cream and international spices at Fox’s Spices (stand 2G90). For the sweet tooth, the Ideal Food section also boasts lots of lovely cakes, biscuits, toffee, fudge, ice creams, pastries and cupcakes. We could go on. Make sure you vote in the Cadbury Philadelphia Mad or Genius marble poll don’t miss The Mediterranean Food Company’s cake section (stand 2F91). Truly Scrumptious and well-priced.

Five Tips to Tame Frizzy Hair…

My hair is pretty big. It’s long and curly (and recently highlighted) and we have had a love-hate relationship with each other for many years. However, lately we seem to be getting on rather well. Maybe it’s because I’m treating it better than I used to. Here are my top 5 tips for improving your relationship with your frizzy hair:

  1.  Avoid Washing Daily: This is hugely tempting when you have curly or frizzy hair because curls can be crushed or flat when you sleep on them. However, too much shampooing will actually dry your hair out. This is because constantly washing your hair strips it of natural oils because it becomes dependent on the daily products used to wash it, such as shampoo and conditioner. So next time you are tempted, think long term and keep it out of the shower. If you’re going to do this though, don’t touch it too much. In order to build up its own natural oils to avoid drying out and produce natural moisture, your hair doesn’t need you fretting over what it looks like and touching it every five seconds. Let it breathe… and then breathe yourself.
  2. Use Good Products Specifically Targeted for Your Hair: If you have coloured or highlighted hair, using shampoo for coloured hair is a good place to start. It isn’t just a marketing ploy. These products are designed for maintaining not only the colour but also the condition of your hair with the colour on it. So, stop grabbing your boyfriend’s 2in1 and start investing in frizz-free products…
