Weekend in Texas

texas trip photos 1

I just got back from a long weekend in Texas for my friends’ wedding. Austin was pretty cool. Texans are super friendly. It was great to lie out by the pool, check out the food trucks, go to a honky tonk bar and be in San Antonio for Cinco de Mayo. I was with a fantastic group of people, who really made the trip worthwhile. I have a lot of photos on the way, so this is just a quick ‘Hey y’all!’ whilst I get over jet lag and get back into work mode.

London sunshine

20130426-201238.jpg

I went to a friend’s house for dinner the other day and somebody said, “London in the summer is the absolute best” and I couldn’t agree more. London in the sunshine is amazing. Light evenings, the buzz of bars in the street, the amazing street style, random outdoor concerts and parks filled with people having picnics and enjoying a game of frisbee or football.

I’m excited for summer to arrive. These past couple of weeks we have had a very slight hint of what’s to come. People are out in the streets enjoying the weather, they’ve broken out their sunglasses for the first time (myself included) and they are enjoying the first touch of the best season in the best city in the world.

Hope you’re all having a fabulous weekend, wherever you are!

Friday LOVE

20130412-160422.jpg

This week has been pretty fun for me. I’ve seen friends, celebrated birthdays, been out for dinner, got back on top of the blog and my freelancing (somehow!). My mum is coming to visit this weekend and we are off to the theatre to see A Chorus Line, which I have never seen. The weather in the UK is also threatening to warm up. We’ve been in double figures this week for the first time this year. No snow is forecast and my sunglasses are in my bag… just in case!

Here are a few things on the internet that have caught my eye this week.

How much time on the internet is too much? They’ve been debating it over on Hello Giggles. Working at home has it’s advantages but also its disadvantages.

I’ve been investigating How to Save Money whilst on a budget. Necessary for me right now.

Want to know the difference between life in your early twenties and life in your late twenties? It’s right here. And it’s so true.

British Backpacker Sarah Groves lost her life last week in a vile attack in Kashmir. The Sun newspaper went around to her parents’ house demanding identification of photos for publication and asking questions with a dictaphone hidden up the reporter’s sleeve. So much for Leveson. This is why her brother Tom started this petition. #justiceforsarah

Can you be friends with an ex? I’m certainly hoping so, with time.

All the Emotions

I wrote this a few weeks ago, but at the time this post made my week at the time. And I was already having a pretty HILARIOUS day.

Blog Post Love: It’s Okay to not be Okay.

Every now and then I read a blog post on a new blog that really resonates with me. I pop into into my favourites or maybe link to it in a Friday link round-up but I never really take the time to fully pay attention. That’s is why from now on you will find ‘Blog Post LOVE’ pieces on my blog where I write responses to blog posts that have affected me in some way. First up is ‘It’s ok to not be okay’ from Nicole at Life Less Bullshit.

It's okay not to be ok

When I discovered this blog post on Life Less Bullshit (via Amy’s amazing weekly links!), I found myself screaming ‘Yes!’ at the screen. Why? Because it really is ok to not be ok. Life is really stressful sometimes. I’ve had to undergo a lot of stress at work recently. My love life has hardly been a bed of roses over the past few months, and my family situation can cause me to be emotional at times. Nicole’s post made me see that you sometimes have to experience ALL of the emotions and accept that this is just what life is about. These emotions aren’t all necessarily negative. You could be excited to see someone, relieved that something is over, nervous about starting a new project and worried about a friend. Most of the time, all of these things can happen simultaneously and you need to recognise that and take a breath. Maybe that project is just really stressing you out or your boyfriend just really annoyed you about that one thing. It doesn’t mean that you don’t lead a happy life or that you don’t love your job or him in the long run.

The post is just fabulous. Go and read it.

Goats are Funny. End of Story.

So on Friday, I had just about the most hilarious day ever. And it was mainly because of goats. Yes, GOATS. There has been an underlying theme in the office over the past couple of weeks. Mid-afternoon one of us will get bored and hit another one of us up with some kind of hilarious video. This is pretty normal for many offices I guess, but the thing is that we’ve all become a little obsessed with goats. And hilarious goats at that. I’m not talking about a funny picture that makes you smile, type ‘lol’ or a little smiley and go back to your spreadsheets. Oh no. I’m talking about full-on over the top squeals from the girls in the office when they open the video that you have just sent them.

It started with this…

…escalated to this…

With a couple of these thrown in…

goat pictures

This got stuck to my desk when I was on a break.

And ended with this:

I could NOT breathe. I was laughing so much with tears streaming down my face. It was just the culmination of a really entertaining afternoon.

And I don’t usually do funny videos. Or animal things. I don’t get cat pictures (sorry!). However, this was all too much. I’m converted.

What gets you through your day?

Happy Mother’s Day!

It’s Mother’s Day here in the UK! I’m at home for the weekend, which makes me super happy because not only do I get to not cook, hang out with my family and spend a lot less that I would if I was out and about in London, but I also get to sleep in this beautiful bed AND see these beautiful pups. Score.

Friday LOVE

It’s Friday! Thank heavens for that. Seriously. This week was supposed to be very busy for me. I had plans every night. And unfortunately, they all went out of the window when I woke up on Tuesday with the worst migraine ever. I couldn’t see straight and I had meetings and training sessions to get through. By Tuesday night, I had a full-on cold. Wednesday, I barely left the sofa. Out went dinner with friends, work drinks and a pretty special invitation to the ***LACOSTE L!VE TEE PARTY*** (They sent me over some pics though, if you’re interested). Luckily, apart from a couple of work meetings, I have not a lot planned for today. So I’m catching up on study reading, organising a few things, sorting through emails before heading home for a chilled out weekend. It’s Mother’s Day here in the UK, so I’m going to see my family and maybe fit in lunch with a friend too.

I’m also aware that I have been a terrible blogger, in terms of frequency and consistency, so I am really hoping to get back on top of that too. Incidentally, how do you balance your time?

Here’s a little link love for you all too:

Love this! Size is in the eye of the beholder.

Yes, this happened. Superheroes are not all fictitious.

Quote of the week: “I know it’s hard to write, darling. But it’s harder not to. The only way you’ll find out if you “have it in you” is to get to work and see if you do. The only way to override your “limitations, insecurities, jealousies, and ineptitude” is to produce. You have limitations. You are in some ways inept. This is true of every writer, and it’s especially true of writers who are 26. You will feel insecure and jealous. How much power you give those feelings is entirely up to you.” ( from here )

Jennifer Lawrence is still doing it for me.

EVERYTHING on The Everygirl is making me smile.  Particularly, a tour of Cait’s studio and this inspiring interview with Caitlin  Wilson.

Get it Done

At the moment, I am really struggling with the finishing touches to my flat. I love living alone and having all of my own space, but I’m trying to girly it up and parts of it are stressing me out because I rent and some of the furniture doesn’t quite go with my taste. Getting things delivered is becoming an issue because I can’t seem to find anyone who will deliver to me on a Saturday morning. Tuesday afternoons unfortunately do not work for me or any other working person in London – I can’t be the only one! It’s so frustrating! Little by little.

The other thing that I’d like to do is sort out my health. I have been a little weak recently. I was ill for most of December and never really gave my body time to recover. I was out having dinner all the time with friends and meeting different people for drinks and just generally enjoying the festive season. But since I have been getting back into work and my routine, I haven’t been able to shake it. Last night, I felt terrible and then this morning my body was just wiped. NO energy and not much of a voice. I slept for 12 hours and have inhaled vitamins and green tea and vegetables all day, whilst trying to take it easy. I did still catch up on all emails though. I couldn’t completely switch off!

Finally, I’m such a naughty blogger at the moment. It’s the story of my life really. I’m more of a planner than a doer. I like to be super organised. I have sheets of editorial calendars, notes, photos and drafts etc but I’m still not quite churning out these posts. I guess I don’t quite follow through maybe. That’s why I like this print that I spotted a few months ago. I’m working on it. I know that as a part-time blogger with a full-time job and full-on social life, something has got to give. So I’m getting healthy and sleeping more so that for the hours that I am awake, I am so much more productive.

How do you stay healthy and motivated?

Tourist at Home

I had so much fun this weekend. My friend Danni, a great friend from university, came to stay and I was so excited to show London to her and have a proper catch up. Not just a dinner, but a whole weekend of girl time! It was amazing.

We hung out and caught up over wine and fajitas on Friday night when she arrived. On Saturday, we spent some time down by the river. I seem to spend a lot of time on Southbank meeting friends, but Danni had never been, so we took a (brisk!) walk down by the water past all of the boats and restaurants, had lunch overlooking London and then headed into the Tate Modern for a spot of culture. Then I took her further down the river to Borough Market, where we sampled some mulled wine and soaked up the atmosphere as darkness fell. I also got very excited to show her Bridget Jones’ front door. I don’t know if she was that into it, but it excites me every time I see it! We wandered around Vinopolis with their amazing umbrella display before dipping into Bermondsey and over Tower Bridge to St Katherine’s Docks for a well-deserved cocktail hour. Especially as it was absolutely freezing and rainy at that point. We then ventured over to St Paul’s for quiet French bistro dinner, met my other friend, In, for drinks and headed to meet more people at Sky Bar in East London. The views from the top of that building was amazing. Needless to say, Sunday was pretty much about jumping out of bed and making it to the station in time for her train. We had planned on going to brunch, but didn’t quite manage that.

20130115-212836.jpg

I topped off the weekend by catching up with another friend catching another train from another station, before heading home to crash in front of the television and wait for the snow. It is so much fun to live in a city like London and to embrace what is essentially right on your doorstep. Who’s coming to visit next?!

How was your weekend?

New Year, New Beginnings

!0 things to know to move forward
TGIF! Today is the first Friday of 2013. How are you celebrating? I’m meeting a friend for what should be coffee after work but will probably turn into a glass of wine. Hey, it’s Friday and it’s January! As I have mentioned many times before, I believe that depriving yourself in January is even more depressing than the winter weather outside tends to be. I may be focusing on looking after myself and being healthier after all of the Christmas partying that went on, but I most certainly have not given anything up and am NOT on a diet!
Here’s what I have been up to in the past month:

Christmas at Home
New Year’s Eve in London
Clothes Show Live coverage with Yahoo!

Professionally, my main goal for this year is to be a writer. I realise that may sound silly as someone who has been calling herself a writer for 5 years, but I recently read a post by Elise from one of my favourite blogs ‘A Beautiful Mess’ about not being afraid to start all over again with your passion and how to focus on it from a new perspective which really struck a chord with me. Being a real writer means taking more than five seconds to shove a couple of sentences into a blogpost before publishing without proofing. I don’t do that at work, so why would I do that in my writing?

I am known for being somebody who takes on too much. ‘Burning the candle at both ends’ is a phrase that often crops up in my life. It shouldn’t be this way. I need to start to take the time to do things properly, from cleaning my bathroom to doing my make up to writing my blog. I may get less done overall, but what I do get done will be done very well. And that will make me feel so much better.

Personally, I’m not one to air my dirty laundry on my blog. My actual, real life and feelings don’t tend to feature on here, which is madness because after all this is my blog and it is named after me. I tend to focus purely on the positive, but I have hinted a couple of times in recent posts and comments that I am now single after five years, but I haven’t said it explicitly. So there it is. I am. It is definitely taking some time to adjust to this fact (I couldn’t refer to him as ‘my ex’ for at least a month), so my main resolution for 2013 is to just be happy and live for the moment. And that’s the reason why I like this infographic so much. You can accept that things have happened and acknowledge that they happened for a reason, but unless you actually move on from a situation, there’s really no point in saying that you want to.

Oh, and I do have a couple of other goals too by the way, just in case you didn’t think the above was enough…

  • Learn to use my camera properly.
  • Learn more Italian.
  • Learn more about SEO and HTML.

I guess I’m all about life-long learning!

Happy New Year everybody. I hope 2013 is magical for all of you.
