Heathrow Terminal 5 is such a different affair from the rest. Dropped off outside by our car, we wandered in, dropped off our bags, popped through security and headed to find some food. It was so easy and civilised.
Gordon Ramsay’s Express Plane Food Menu promises two gourmet courses for £16.95 in 25minutes, perfect for a quick bite whilst waiting for a flight. The whole place is decorated like an old school plane lounge with a cool bar. I opted for a white onion soup with smoked haddock, he got the beef carpaccio and then we both chose the pork belly salad with apple, fennel and celeriac to follow.
The food was spectacular. The service however was not. The thing is that, in order for 25 minutes to be accomplished the waiters need to be aware of what’s going on. We waited 10 minutes to get a bill and then another 10 for someone to appear with a card machine. They weren’t busy, they just didn’t seem to be on top of their customers, causing us to have to take a casual jog to our gate. Also, look out for extra costs- there’s a cover charge per person as well as a service charge, which I guess wouldn’t be included if you sit at the bar- and you’d probably get better service too! Which was a shame, because otherwise my first experience of Terminal 5 was divine.
I havent been put off the place, but I’m not sure I’d trust the 25 minute promise, given that I felt rushed and had an hour until my flight. I’d love to try Gordon’s plane food picnic next time! For £12.95, you can take your own healthy meal on to the plane in a cute lunchbox. Such a good idea for long haul flights!
